Artist Statement When I start a painting, I think of each shape and color as having its own flavor, scent, and texture. I want the viewer to recall the impossible complexity of ginger, the fragrance of mint, and the mouth-puckering sting of fresh lime. Layers of soft pastel create planes of vibrant and deeply saturated colors. The powdery and fragile characteristics of this medium reflect light while imparting depth, movement, and a surprising vulnerability. I use root rectangles and dynamic symmetry based on mathematical ratios to divide the page into a grid of harmonious parts. This approach allows me to deconstruct the conventional form into abstract shapes and reassemble them in unexpected and playful ways. In my piece, “Chocolate Gateau,” deeply saturated colors evoke the memory of tasting the smokey and velvety chocolate. A bite of some forbidden fruit. Tart, delicious, and irresistible.
